McCarthy breaks news that NI Water plans to close three offices

Alliance Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy has revealed that he has been informed that NI Water plans to close their Conlig, Downpatrick and Lisburn premises. The announcement was made in at NI Water meeting today and the offices will be closed by 1 April 2009, and staff will be expected to work in the Belfast office.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “I am annoyed that NI Water chiefs have proposed to close these three offices and make the staff work in Belfast. Quite a considerable number of staff will be affected by this move. The local communities will be hit hard by this and the local economies will undoubtedly suffer.

“The public needs immediate clarification from NI Water on this matter.

“While the Bain Report on decentralisation is flawed, this totally flies in the face of all its findings.

“I find this decision even more bizarre because NI Water own the premises they are planning to close but don’t own the office they are moving staff to in Belfast.

“Coming on the back of the massive golden handshake that was given to the former NI Water Chief, Katharine Bryan, this is staggering.”
