McCarthy backs Strangford turbine but says marine environment must be monitored

Strangford Alliance MLA Kieran McCarthy has welcomed plans for a marine turbine in Strangford Lough that will generate green electricity, but said that it must be monitored to ensure it does not affect the environment in and around the lough. The turbine will provide electricity for Seagen and was assembled at Harland and Wolff.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “I would welcome this turbine as long as it helps provide information on clean, cheaper electricity and does not upset the natural environment around the lough.

“This project provides a great opportunity to start the process of going green on energy production, but it must be monitored to ensure that it does not affect the local environment. This is the type of brave initiative that is needed to increase sustainability.

“I hope that the turbine is up and running quickly because the scheme has been blighted by delays in recent times.

“I will, however, be keeping a close eye on the project, because it must have no negative impact on marine life, and the lough itself. I welcome recent information on how it will be monitored to ensure no ill-effects on seals in particular. This issue must be taken seriously.

“Provided that the natural balance of the lough is maintained, this scheme can be a flagship for sustainability.”
