McCarthy backs call for ban on smoking in cars with children

Alliance Health spokesperson, Kieran McCarthy MLA, has backed the call from the Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke association that there should be a ban on smoking in cars with children. Westminster recently empowered the Government to introduce such a ban in England

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “I would be in full support of a ban on smoking in cars with children. I was pleased to recently see MPs in Westminster voicing their support for such a law, so I hope the Assembly will also look to implement such a ban.

“There was near unanimous support in the Assembly for the introduction of plain cigarette packaging, so I would be hopeful that there would be similar support for a ban on smoking in cars with children.

“Smoking in a confined space such as a car will obviously pose a health risk to children.

“We must do more to protect the public’s health and to encourage people to give up smoking.”
