McAllister appalled by North Belfast racist attacks

Alliance Belfast Councillor Nuala McAllister has condemned the racist attacks on a house in North Belfast on Sunday. A window was broken at 02:50 on Sunday morning at the house on Parkmount Street. The two men who live in the house were then later assaulted on Sunday afternoon. Racist taunts were also shouted by the group who assaulted the two men.

Cllr Nuala McAllister said: “I am shocked and appalled that these two men were subjected to two racist attacks in 12 hours. There is no place for racism in our society. The large turnout at the Belfast rally against racism on Saturday sent out an important message that the vast majority of the public are opposed to these attacks.

“We must take action to combat the recent spate of racist crimes in Belfast. I am glad to see the Police taking this matter seriously after they set up Operation Reiner, but more must be done. The First and deputy First Ministers must publish the long awaited Racial Equality Strategy as a matter of urgency.

“I would urge anybody with any information about these attacks to contact the Police.”
