Mayors of North Down and Belfast meet to discuss Belfast to Holywood cycle path and Belfast City Airport

North Down Mayor Andrew Muir and Belfast Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir have met at Belfast City Airport to discuss economic developments at the airport and the potential for a cycle route between Belfast and Holywood to link up the Comber Greenway and the North Down Coastal Path.

North Down Mayor Cllr Andrew Muir said: “I was delighted to meet with Belfast Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir on the boundary of both boroughs and look forward to working with him over my year as Mayor along with the new Mayor of Ards prioritising partnerships, prosperity and peace over party politics.

“Only by Working as One can we can realise the momentous opportunities available and create an open and welcoming environment for businesses by providing courageous civic leadership for everyone.

“Belfast City Airport is one our most valuable transport assets, particularly for business passengers. This vital transport hub ensures that businesses across Belfast and North Down are a flying success. I am determined to work with the Airport and key stakeholders to address concerns and provide a more stable and secure future for this valuable economic gateway.

“I am pleased that the Lord Mayor shares my passion for providing more sustainable transport routes. I look forward to working closely with him to explore the feasibility of the Belfast to Holywood Greenway as a sustainable solution offering big benefits to both Belfast and the North Down Borough.”

Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Mairtin O’Muilleoir said: “I am keen to build relationships with the council areas that border with Belfast and find areas of mutual interest that we can work together on. I was extremely pleased to meet the Mayor of North Down Andrew Muir and we had a very productive discussion

“It is very fitting that today’s meeting has taken place at Belfast City Airport which is a key economic driver for both Belfast and North Down and I am keen to promote the economy and jobs not just in Belfast but on a wider level. We also discussed social and environmental issues, including the North Down cycle trail, and hopefully we can make progress on a number of fronts.”
