Alliance Lisburn South representative Stephen Martin hailed the opening of the new Midwife Led Unit at Lagan Valley Hospital ensuring the continuation of maternity services in the city.
Stephen Martin said: “It was clear that local people did not want to see the removal of local maternity services by the Minister and as a result of the long running campaign led by staff, patients, Lisburn City Council & the Ulster Star, I am delighted that we have seen the opening of the new facilities. The campaign to retain maternity services shows what can be done in this era of austerity if people work together to achieve a result which at one stage looked lost.
“Congratulations must go to all involved especially the staff whose professionalism and service in the transition period to the new unit continued to be of the highest standard.”
