Lyttle welcomes review into health and wellbeing services available to former prison officers

Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle has welcomed the announcement of an urgent review into the health and wellbeing services available to former prison officers.

The review into the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust (PRRT) by the Department of Justice will look at the services available to former prison officers and identify if additional provision is appropriate. Justice Minister Naomi Long has said the review’s findings should be with the Department by June.

“I welcome the Justice Minister’s confirmation she will carry out a review into the services available to former prison officers, covering physical and psychological conditions, and reskilling,” said Mr Lyttle.

“Prison officers deserve the highest quality health and wellbeing support, given the role they play in our society. I welcome the consideration the Justice Minister is giving to how the PRRT service could be extended to former officers now as well as those currently serving.

“PRRT provides invaluable rehabilitation and retraining to police and prison officers serving everyone in our community in challenging situations. I sincerely hope this provision will be extended to former prison officers in the near future.”
