Lyttle welcomes moves to introduce topical questions in the Assembly

Alliance MLA and Assembly Procedures Committee Member Chris Lyttle has welcomed proposals to introduce topical question time at the Assembly. The questions would not be known in advance by the Minister, making question time less predictable as currently questions have to be submitted two weeks in advance.

Chris Lyttle initially proposed the idea at the Assembly Procedures Committee on the 8thNovember 2011. The proposal will be passed following a committee motion on Monday.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “There is a concern that current Assembly Question Time arrangements lack spontaneity. It is hoped that topical questions, the subject of which will not be known by Ministers in advance, will address this problem and help MLAs to hold Ministers to account on key issues of public concern.
