Alliance Education spokesperson Chris Lyttle MLA has welcomed an announcement P4-P7 pupils will return to class from March 22.
All other pupils in post-primary schools are scheduled to return on April 12 subject to review by the end of the month due to public health guidance. Pupils in P1-P3, as well as nursery and pre-school children, have already returned to the classroom.
“This is a welcome milestone in the safe and cautious easing of restrictions,” said Mr Lyttle, Chair of the Assembly’s Education Committee.
“However, it is disappointing this announcement has come at extremely short notice – only a few days before schools are now due to open this coming Monday. The Minister’s timeframe means teachers, staff, parents and pupils only have a short notice period before returning.
“I also welcome the start of long overdue testing in schools for teachers and pupils in Years 12-14. I will be seeking an urgent update from the Minister on when this will extend to all staff and pupils in across our schools, so we can expedite the safe and full return for everyone.”
