Lyttle says public inquiry on runway issue is vital

Following news that the Department of Environment has submitted a new request for a public inquiry into plans to extend the runway at Belfast City Airport, East Belfast Alliance Candidate Chris Lyttle has said a public inquiry, with full information on the environmental impact, is essential. He also said that no decision regarding increasing the number of plane seats for sale should have been made ahead of any public inquiry. Alliance put a motion to the Assembly on the need for a full public inquiry on the issue.

Chris Lyttle said: “It is absolutely vital that there is a public inquiry into the proposed runway extension. We need to allow everyone, including people living in the area and stakeholders, to be able to have a say on this issue. It is also essential that all the environmental information possible is made available to be considered at the public inquiry. Full openness and transparency is vital. Alliance brought this issue to the floor of the Assembly and we believe that it is very important that a full public inquiry takes place.

“Also, no decision regarding increasing the number of plane seats for sale should have been taken ahead of any public inquiry.”
