Lyttle hosts Stormont animal welfare event

Chris Lyttle MLA is to host an Assembly event highlighting work being done to stop cruelty against animals.

The Alliance MLA, the Vice-Chair of the Assembly’s All-Party Group on Animal Welfare, is sponsoring the occasion for the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) group tomorrow (Monday). It will hear from wildlife campaigner Bill Oddie and Janice Watt from the LACS.

Mr Lyttle said it was a chance to raise awareness of animal welfare issues and echo calls for a hunting ban in Northern Ireland.

“Further action is needed to tackle animal cruelty issues in NI such as hunting with dogs. Yet despite pressure, the First and deputy First Ministers maintain there are no plans to even discuss the issue. I have recently called on them to bring the matter to the Assembly in order to allow local representatives a chance to publicly debate the topic.

“It will be important; therefore, to hear from such a respected voice as Bill Oddie at this League Against Cruel Sports event, who will share his valuable insight into wildlife, welfare and conservation. He and the LACS encapsulates the overwhelming view of the public – that such horrifying cruelty should be a thing of the past.”
