Lyttle calls for adequate funding for Racial Equality Strategy

Alliance OFMDFM spokesperson, Chris Lyttle MLA, has said that the First and deputy First Ministers must provide adequate funding for the Racial Equality Strategy. Chris was speaking during the Supply Resolution debate in the Assembly on Monday.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “We have now had two major rallies in Belfast in the past 10 days where thousands of people outlined their support for the urgent publication of a Racial Equality Strategy. I hope that it will now be published as a matter of urgency; however, it is also important that such a strategy is adequately funded and has a clear action plan.

“Last week the Assembly backed an Alliance amendment calling for such a strategy to be published. It is shocking that this strategy has been seven years in the making; OFMDFM can no longer delay this strategy – they must implement it now.

“I have been deeply concerned by the recent spate of racist attacks in Belfast. I welcome the action by the Police to combat these crimes such as the setting up of a specific helpline. It is time for action from OFMDFM to promote community relations and protect ethnic minorities.”
