Chris Lyttle MLA said: “We have now had two major rallies in Belfast in the past 10 days where thousands of people outlined their support for the urgent publication of a Racial Equality Strategy. I hope that it will now be published as a matter of urgency; however, it is also important that such a strategy is adequately funded and has a clear action plan.
“Last week the Assembly backed an Alliance amendment calling for such a strategy to be published. It is shocking that this strategy has been seven years in the making; OFMDFM can no longer delay this strategy – they must implement it now.
“I have been deeply concerned by the recent spate of racist attacks in Belfast. I welcome the action by the Police to combat these crimes such as the setting up of a specific helpline. It is time for action from OFMDFM to promote community relations and protect ethnic minorities.”
