Lyttle: All publicly funded events should be free from sectarianism

Alliance OFMDFM spokesperson Chris Lyttle MLA, will propose an amendment to an Assembly motion on Tuesday about comments made at the Ardoyne Fleadh, which calls for the Executive to work to ensure that all publicly funded events remain free from sectarianism.

A video taken at the event appeared to show the Druids band making sectarian comments and glorifying terrorism.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “I was disgusted by the recklessly sectarian comments at the Ardoyne Fleadh. These remarks serve only to increase tensions and damage community relations in our society. There should not be any acceptance of this type of inflammatory language.

“In building a shared and safe future for everyone, we must all condemn sectarianism of any kind. However, we must not just condemn these incidents; OFMDFM must take action to meet the commitments in their shared future strategy, which there has been little progress on since it was published in 2013.

“It is important that all publicly funded events remain free from sectarianism or hatred of any kind. The Executive must implement measures to ensure that events celebrating different cultures are open and welcoming to all.”
