Lunn says Orange Order should scrap rule forbidding members from attending mass

Following news that Orange Order disciplinary committees found that Tom Elliott and Danny Kennedy had no case to answer after they attended the funeral of police officer Ronan Kerr, Alliance MLA Trevor Lunn said that the Orange Order must demonstrate they want a shared future by scrapping the rule forbidding members from taking part in a Catholic mass.
Trevor Lunn MLA said: “It’s a pity that this action was taken in the first place by the Orange Order. I hope as a result of this announcement they will now look to scrap this rule.
“The Orange Order must demonstrate they want to see a shared future and I believe that it is essential that they get rid of the rule forbidding members from attending Catholic mass.
Apart from anything else, I have seen on many occasions members of the Orange Order paying their respects by attending a Catholic funeral service without any action being taken.
“I also believe that if the Orange Order does not scrap this rule, Ulster Unionists who are involved in the organisation should examine their links with the organisation.”
