Lunn criticises those behind placing of flags on bonfire

Alliance Justice spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has criticised those who placed a Union flag on a bonfire in West Belfast.

The flag was hung from the anti-internment bonfire at Divis Street before being set ablaze last night (Monday). In addition, a bonfire in the New Lodge area of North Belfast contained a number of tyres, which Mr Lunn said was a serious health risk for people there.

Mr Lunn said he condemned the appearance of the flag in these circumstances.

“It is disrespectful to burn any national flag on a bonfire or anywhere else. It is a crime that does nothing but raise tension and promote division.

“It is also not acceptable to burn tyres on a bonfire, as the dangerous toxins they contain could damage the health of those in the surrounding area.

“Alliance believes in in respectful, non-intimidatory displays of culture, and showing tolerance for the beliefs and viewpoints of others. However, burning flags does not do that. Those who carry out this sort of display must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”
