Lord Mayor condemns racist housing discrimination

BELFAST Lord Mayor Tom Ekin has said that racist discrimination against members of minority ethnic communities seeking accommodation in South Belfast should not be tolerated.

Speaking after it was revealed that an estate agency has used racist discrimination when advertising accommodation to let in the south of the city, Councillor Ekin stated:

“This is a throwback to the 1950s in other parts of the world, and shows how far we have to go to achieve real racial equality in Belfast.

“This practice of deliberate discrimination is giving in to racism. We are trying to build a united community in Belfast, and there should be no place for this racism, as people have a right to live where they want. Cities that maintain that kind of insularity and division do not prosper, and I would utterly condemn any discrimination against minority ethnic groups when seeking accommodation.”
