Long says decommissioning confirmation is very significant

Alliance Deputy Leader Naomi Long MLA has welcomed the progress made by the UVF and Red Hand Commando on decommissioning saying these are significant moves, and she has called on the UDA to fully decommission also. Her comments come as the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning said it had witnessed a ‘major decommissioning event’.

Naomi Long MLA said: “I welcome these moves and they are a strong indication that our society is moving forward to a totally peaceful future.

“My thoughts are, however, very much with the families of the victims of violence at this time.

“These very significant moves are long overdue but nevertheless indicate a commitment to peace.

“It appears that the UVF and Red Hand Commando may have decommissioned fully – the UDA must also do the same. There can be no excuse for not meeting the Secretary of State’s deadline.”
