Long expresses regret over Tesco closures

East Belfast MP Naomi Long has said she is disappointed by the news that Tesco will close two stores in her constituency.

The retail giant announced today (Wednesday) that the Connswater and Cregagh Road branches will cease trading on April 4, with over 150 jobs being put at risk.

Alliance MP Ms Long said she regretted the news, which comes as the company closes 43 shops across the UK.

“My primary concern is for those people who may lose their jobs if they are not redeployed to other Tesco stores. I have been assured the company will attempt to offer them alternative roles and I will remain in contact with Tesco to ensure this happens where possible. I am also seeking a meeting with Connswater Shopping Centre management to see about the impact on it.

“The opening of a large Tesco store on the Castlereagh Road in 2012 will have had an effect on the smaller outlets and this is one of the unfortunate outcomes, with regrettable job losses.

“I will also be in contact with my Alliance colleague, Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry, and his Department, regarding guidance and assistance for those who wish to continue working for the company, to make sure they are given the support necessary.”
