Lo welcomes consultation on South Belfast on street parking

Alliance South Belfast MLA Anna Lo has welcomed the consultation by the Department for Regional Development on possible changes to urban clearway restrictions for on street parking on certain roads in South Belfast. The proposed changes would affect the Lisburn Road, Malone Road and Stranmillis Road. The changes would see parking restrictions only on Belfast city bound lanes in the morning and country bound lanes in the evening.

Anna Lo MLA said: “These proposals make common sense, so I am glad they are now being seriously considered by the Minister. I would urge as many people as possible to respond to the consultation so that all views can be considered.

“I have been discussing this proposal with the Lisburn Road Business Association for some time. From listening to the experience of traders, it is clear that there is a considerable difference in the traffic flows in the morning and evening, particularly on the Lisburn Road. By alternating the restrictions, we would not be affecting traffic but it would ensure that more parking spaces would be available for shoppers.

“These proposals would help in the development of the Lisburn Road as a distinct shopping area, which I know the Lisburn Road Business Association is trying to do with their master plan for promoting the local identity of independent shopping, eateries and social activities in the area.

“At a time when we are seeing more and more shops closing down, such initiatives should be supported.”
