Lo shows solidarity with arts groups

Alliance Arts spokesperson Anna Lo has showed solidarity with arts groups by attending a protest about cuts to its budget.

South Belfast MLA Ms Lo was one of several Alliance elected representatives who participated in the demonstration, outside Parliament Buildings today (Tuesday). They joined around 200 artists, musicians and others calling on Arts Minister Caral Ní Chuilín to halt reductions to arts grants.

Ms Lo said arts budgets had been squeezed dangerously due to cuts.

“Arts are an important outlet in our society that allows us to develop creativity. There are wider benefits too – studies show investment in the arts supports personal well-being and also aids our economy.

“Unfortunately, the Minister has made in-year cuts to fund other community projects, which suggests she does not realise the extremely worthwhile community work our arts sector already carries out.

“Arts funding in Northern Ireland is already the lowest in the UK and Ireland. Despite this, it is vibrant. It is vital we support it, not suffocate it.”
