Lo: Potential scrapping of Runkerry golf course is good news for the environment

Alliance Environment spokesperson, Anna Lo MLA, has said that the potential scrapping of any plans for the Runkerry golf course is good news for the surrounding environment. It appears that the land for the proposed golf resort is in the process of being sold to another buyer after those behind the plans had difficulty raising finance. It is uncertain whether a golf resort will be built at all.

Anna Lo MLA said: “It will be good news for the local environment if plans for a golf resort are completely scrapped. I previously raised my concerns about the impact of these plans on the surrounding area. There were fears that if this golf resort went ahead it may impact on the World Heritage status of the Giant’s Causeway.

“While I support the redevelopment of the North Coast in principle, it must be done in a considered way that protects the environment. It is important that environmental considerations are taken into account when granting planning permission for such developments.

“The Giant’s Causeway is our only World Heritage site and its protection is absolutely vital. The environment is one of Northern Ireland’s greatest assets, which shouldn’t be taken for granted or ignored.”
