The MLA for South Belfast was speaking after the suspicious device was discovered in Jocelyn Street on Sunday.
Anna Lo MLA said: “Those responsible for this hoax device have caused significant fear amongst the local community, as well as wasting valuable police time and resources.
“I want to recognise the quick and effective work of all involved in ensuring those forced to evacuate had all the relevant information and a safe place to wait during what must have been a distressing time.
“The cowardly actions of those determined to cause fear among our community cannot be allowed to continue and I would urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.”
