Cllr Alan Lawther said: “I believe the Environment Minister should introduce a plastic bag levy to encourage more re-use of bags.
“Alliance has consistently called for the creation of such a levy to reduce the number of bags used and tackle the problem of litter.
“A levy could also help provide funds for environmental projects. It is important that every effort is made to deal with this issue. Introducing a levy would be easy to do and would be an effective way to help protect our environment and tackle litter.”
