The victim suffered injuries to his face when a man pushed his way into his home in Bleerick Drive on Saturday night.
Councillor Neil Kelly said: “I am appalled that this elderly gentleman had to go through this ordeal at the hands of a mindless thug.
“My thoughts are with the man who suffered this terrible attack and I hope he makes a full recovery. This type of behaviour is not welcome in Antrim.
“I would ask that anyone with information about this incident would go immediately to the PSNI. The person responsible must face the full rigour of the law.”
