Pottinger Councillor Maíre Hendron said: “This was a real act of bravery and the man’s neighbour deserves fulsome praise for his courage.
“This fire illustrates how important it is for people to have working smoke alarms fitted in their homes. There can be no clearer warning to people who do not already have alarms fitted in their homes than a horrific incident like this.
“I hope the man who was rescued makes a full and speedy recovery.”
