Hendron appalled at violence in East Belfast

Alliance Belfast Council Group Leader Cllr Maire Hendron has condemned a further night of violence in East Belfast in which two buses were hijacked and petrol bombs were thrown at St Matthew’s Church where a group of children with special needs were meeting at the time.

Cllr Maire Hendron said: “I am sickened at this violence. To attack a church where a group of children with special needs were meeting is appalling.

“The people who are carrying out this violence are damaging their own community. By hijacking two buses, they are disrupting vital public services to their own streets.

“This violence must stop. There cannot be any justification for any of this violence, nor should anybody attempt to give a reason for the causes of this trouble

“This violence further highlights the deep rooted divisions in our society and underlines the importance of finding shared solutions to these problems.”
