David Ford said: “Last night’s scenes on the streets of North Belfast are abhorrent. There is absolutely no need for crowds of UDA supporters to take to the streets. Last night’s action is disgraceful and merely raises the already high level of tension in North Belfast.
“We do not want to see another loyalist feud, therefore I call for calm in the coming weeks. Only a few days ago, a coroners report into the murder of George Legg illustrated the sheer barbarism of loyalist feuds, with comparisons being drawn to the actions of the Shankill Butchers.”
David Ford concluded: “The UDA should be thinking about shutting up shop permanently instead of arranging intimidatory street protests.”
