Ford condemns Orange plans for Belfast protest

ALLIANCE Leader David Ford has called on the Orange Order not to blockade Belfast on Monday, following reports that it intended to protest on roads into and out of the city after the ‘Twelfth’ demonstrations.

Mr Ford said: “I would condemn any plans to blockade Belfast and prevent people entering or leaving the city. The Orange Order used to pride itself on being a lawful organisation, and it really is time for the Order to decide to abide by the rule of law.

“The public has had enough of being held to ransom, and if the Order are intent on using the threat of force to secure their aims, they are merely descending to the level of paramilitarism and are betraying everything they claim to stand for.”
