Ford campaigns on airport bus route change

Alliance Leader David Ford has written to object to Translink’s proposals to change the route of the Airbus 300 service. It is proposed that the service will go straight from Great Victoria Street to the Westlink, cutting out its current stops at Donegall Place and Royal Avenue on the way to the Airport; however, the journey into Belfast will remain the same as it currently is.

The South Antrim MLA said: “I am deeply concerned about this change and have written to Translink. I have also asked the Council to write to them, and I am seeking the opinions of people in the Templepatrick area.

“This new route may be quicker for those travelling from Belfast to the International Airport; however, the majority of passengers that use the service into Belfast board in Templepatrick. Some live in the village and some using the park and ride service come from as far afield as Doagh and Ballyclare.

“This new route would be a real inconvenience for those who work around Royal Avenue , who would now have to walk to Great Victoria Street to get the bus home.

“This will pose real problems for some older people and those with mobility problems who can still get off the bus in Royal Avenue, but cannot board there in their return journey.

“One compromise might be to have two buses every hour going down the Westlink and the other two every hour continuing to go down Royal Avenue.”
