Cllr Barney Fitzpatrick said: “The whole town is in a total state of shock. The entire community is devastated at this tragic news, and I am sure I speak for everyone when I extend my deepest condolences to the family of the victim.
“Portstewart is a pictureque and friendly place, and I am deeply shocked at events today.
“Anyone who can help police to catch those involved has a duty to contact the police immediately.”
