Farry congratulates Swinson on election as Liberal Democrat leader

Alliance Deputy Leader Stephen Farry has congratulated Jo Swinson MP on her election as new leader of the Liberal Democrats.

The 39-year-old MP for East Dunbartonshire, who was previously party deputy leader, will succeed Sir Vince Cable.

“I want to warmly congratulate Jo Swinson on her election as Liberal Democrat leader,” said Dr Farry.

“While Alliance and the Liberal Democrats are two distinct parties with our own policies, we share many of the same values and have had a close working relationship.

“There are many challenges ahead for the UK as a while, including opposing Brexit, improving the economy and tackling climate change, and I wish Jo well in playing a role in that.

“I also want to pay tribute to the leadership of Sir Vince Cable over the past number of years, in particular all he did to push the issue of a People’s Vote on Brexit, and his role in the recent growth of the party.”
