End cultural sham war and tackle real issues

Alliance Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy MLA has hit out at the sham cultural war that is breaking out between the DUP and Sinn Fein saying they should both be focussing on areas of real need, not constantly arguing about Irish language issues.

Kieran McCarthy MLA stated: “The DUP and Sinn Fein are trying to start a sham cultural war. This is nothing but a waste of time and a distraction from important issues of real need for local people.

“What about our health service? What about tackling poverty? What about ending segregation? The tribal parties seem to be obsessed with phoney wars over language when many local people are facing ruin with rising energy, food and fuel bills. The Executive often runs away from the real issues, yet tribal MLAs are falling over themselves to get involved in playground wars over languages.

“Unionists seem to propose debates against the Irish language every few weeks and people are sick of hearing these tired old arguments. Irish language schools are an important part of our society and unionists must stop doing them down.

“My message to tribal timewasters is stop messing around and get on with your job.”
