Disappointment that England’s bid to host World Cup was unsuccessful

Alliance Sports Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has expressed disappointment that England have been unsuccessful in their bid to host the 2018 World Cup saying had the tournament been taking place in England, this might have had positive impacts for both tourism and football in Northern Ireland.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “This news is extremely disappointing for the whole region. I believe England would have made magnificent hosts for this competition, as they had done in 1966.

“The World Cup is the biggest festival of football on this planet and the excitement and publicity it creates across the globe can bring massive benefits to any host nation for years and years. There could potentially have been real benefits in relation to tourism and football in Northern Ireland had the bid been successful.

“I congratulate Russia on winning the bid process, but I am deeply disappointing that England won’t get the chance to host the World Cup in 2018.”
