Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson has urged the Economy Minister to stand up for fair redundancies for those currently employed by Debenhams and the Arcadia Group.
Debenhams stores are set to close, with Arcadia – owner of shops such as Topshop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins – has gone into administration, putting thousands of jobs at risk.
“It is extremely concerning to hear these companies have failed to reach out and fulfil their legal obligations by working with trade unions on these issues,” said Mr Dickson.
“I am glad to hear the Minister will raise this issue with the Business Secretary tomorrow as it is essential trade unions are able to be part of the process that ensures workers get a fair deal going forward.
“My thoughts are with all those affected today. This is a terrible blow in the run up to Christmas and we must do all we can to protect these workers, and all those impacted by this development.”
