Dickson says Justice Committee must state that it will not ask the Attorney General to get involved in the Marie Stopes debate

Alliance Justice spokesperson Stewart Dickson MLA has said the Justice Committee must not ask the Attorney General to get involved in the Marie Stopes debate. Stewart has asked the Attorney General to rescind his offer to get involved in this issue unless he is asked as part of his statutory roles.

Stewart Dickson MLA said: “I was very concerned by the Attorney General’s decision to get involved in the Marie Stopes debate when he has no statutory role to do so at this stage.

“Marie Stopes have stated that they will comply within the rules of the law in Northern Ireland and until they break the rules then there is no role for the Attorney General to play in this debate. He is getting into dangerous territory by making himself available to the Justice Committee to investigate Marie Stopes. He has to remain neutral to ensure there is no conflict of interest if a case is brought against Marie Stopes.

“I will be raising this issue at the Justice Committee and putting it on record that the Justice Committee should not be asking the Attorney General to get involved in this debate. I am actually calling on the Attorney General to rescind his offer to investigate Marie Stopes.

“At this point, the only Assembly Committee that should be looking at this issue is the Health Committee who should be ensuring the regulatory system is in place for Marie Stopes to operate.”
