Dickson says Friday’s protest caused widespread misery

Alliance Chief Whip Stewart Dickson has said that the protests on Friday night caused widespread misery. There was violence in Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey. The MLA said that traders have lost business, employees who left work early may have lost earnings and commuters faced severe traffic disruption.

Stewart Dickson MLA said: “This violence is unacceptable, these rioters are harming their own community. The scenes in Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey are a disgrace.

“This was just wanton violence. These protests have got nothing to do with a flag, it is about a major disconnect that has developed between protestors and those Unionists that they have previously looked to for political representation.

“Despite the intimidation and lies told about the Alliance Party, we engage with everyone to move Northern Ireland beyond our bitter divisions into a genuine shared future.

“These protests must end now. Northern Ireland’s image is being severely damaged, deterring investors who could provide jobs and greater economic stability.

“As a result of the protests on Friday, traders have lost business, employees who left work early may have lost earnings and commuters faced severe traffic disruption.

“The continued disruption caused by protesters is actually turning supporters against them as most people just want to get on with their lives, taking their children to after school activities and socialising with friends.”
