Dickson says Arlene Foster’s call for opening of bus lanes is a non-starter

Alliance Regional Development spokesperson Stewart Dickson MLA has dismissed a proposal from the Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster that Belfast bus lanes should be opened to cars at the weekend.

Stewart Dickson MLA said: “This proposal is a non-starter. Arlene should have spoken in private to her colleague the Regional Development Minister before making these comments – this just shows the lack of joined up co-operation that appears to be the norm between many Executive Ministers.

“In the past few years we have seen a major growth in the number of passengers on Metro bus services. If we are to encourage more people to get out of their car and use public transport then we must continue to provide services such as bus lanes.

“We should also remember that there are a large number of households in the Greater Belfast area that do not have access to a private car and who rely on public transport. We must ensure that there are adequate transport links for everyone and not just private cars.”
