Dickson – organisers should call off Saturday’s parade

Alliance Justice spokesperson Stewart Dickson MLA has called on organisers to call off Saturday’s loyalist parade in Belfast city centre.

Stewart Dickson MLA said: “I am calling on organisers to call off Saturday’s parade. Traders have already expressed concerns about the impact of this parade on their businesses. Many shop owners rely on the Christmas period to sustain their business throughout the year, so it is vital that there is no disruption to such an important shopping period.

“There have been concerns from nearly all political parties about this parade taking place on Saturday. It is clear that the majority of people would welcome any move by the organisers to reconsider their plans.

“I respect the right of people to take part in parades and protests, but there will be serious consequences if this parade undermines the business community in Belfast. It may be more responsible for the organisers not to exercise their right to parade.

“If this parade does go ahead, then I would urge the organisers and stewards to ensure that they adhere to the restrictions that the Parades Commission have imposed. It should be lawful and peaceful.”
