Cochrane welcomes progress on Mesothelioma compensation

Alliance Social Development spokesperson Judith Cochrane MLA hosted an event in Stormont with the British Association of Insurers last week, to update MLAs on the support package for Mesothelioma sufferers.

Today, a Legislative Consent Motion was passed in the Assembly, which will help people establish who their former employer’s insurer was, especially for those whose employers or insurer no longer exist. It will also help streamline the legal process for sufferers.

Judith Cochrane MLA said: “Last summer, the Government announced a package of reforms for Mesothelioma sufferers. Essentially it will help resolve a few difficulties that people have faced in receiving the compensation that they are entitled to.

“It is of the utmost importance that we move quickly on this, given that the average life expectancy after diagnosis of mesothelioma is just two years.

“Being a representative for East Belfast, this issue is of great importance to me and for those who worked in the shipyard. My office has been dealing with a number of cases on this, so anything that improves the compensation process will be most welcome.”
