Cochrane welcomes investment in East Belfast watermains

Alliance East Belfast MLA Judith Cochrane MLA has welcomed the final stage of work to upgrade the watermains in East Belfast. The work will commence in July and is part of £4 million worth of investment by NI Water in East Belfast watermains. The work will centre in the Upper Newtownards Road area and will last till August. This work is desperately needed following the flooding last night in Belfast.

Judith Cochrane MLA said: “Following the severe flooding that affected large parts of Belfast, it is quite clear that there needs to be a lot of work done to improve our water system. So I would like to welcome the final stage of this investment in the watermains in East Belfast.

“While many had concerns about the preparedness of the agencies and the lack of co-ordination, it was plain to see that our water system itself could not cope with that amount of rainfall in such a short period of time.

“This is the final stage of a £4 million investment by NI Water, but it will not solve the problem. We will need to see a large scale investment to ensure that the scenes in Belfast are not repeated.”
