Cochrane: No justification for East Belfast hate crimes

Alliance East Belfast MLA, Judith Cochrane, has condemned two hate crimes which took place in East Belfast on Sunday night. A brick was thrown through the front windscreen of a car in the Park Avenue area. One man has been arrested by the Police.

Racist graffiti was also painted on a wall on Barnetts Road. Paint was also thrown over a car on Colvil Street, but the Police do not believe it was racially motivated.

Judith Cochrane MLA said: “There can be no place in our society for any form of hate crime. Those responsible for these attacks are adding nothing to our society.

“The vast majority of the public in East Belfast are deeply opposed to these attacks. We must send a clear message that these hate crimes will not be tolerated in Northern Ireland and that we should be open and welcoming to people from all backgrounds.

“I would like to offer my support to the victims of these crimes. Nobody deserves to be a victim of such an attack.

“I would encourage anybody with any information about these attacks or any other hate crime to contact the Police.”
