Judith Cochrane MLA said: “I am pleased that the Minister has given this commitment that no part of the Comber Greenway will be sold. It is a fantastic asset for cyclists and is used widely by the local community. I would be deeply saddened if part of it were to be sold – if anything it should be expanded.
“I had been contacted by a number of local people in recent weeks over their fears that the erection of a fence alongside part of the Greenway was part of a ‘land grab’ or was an indication that part of the embankment had been earmarked for sale.
“While the Minister has given this commitment, I do still have concerns regarding the accuracy of Departmental records of the boundary associated with this fencing and I will continue to liaise with DRD to ensure the Comber Greenway is maintained and enhanced.
“I will continue to liaise with the Department for Regional Development to ensure that there is no scope for a land grab.”
