Cllr Patrick Clarke said: “This is fantastic news that such a prestigious sporting event will be coming to Newcastle. It is a great location for this tournament and I hope that the likes of Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell will be taking part.
“This event will bring a large number of spectators to the area and will be a big boost to local businesses. It is more good news for golf in Northern Ireland. Following the success of Royal Portrush when they hosted the 2012 Irish Open, I hope that another successful Irish Open will convince organisers that Northern Ireland can host the Open Championship.
“Golfers from Northern Ireland have been very successful in the past few years and I hope a local competitor will win this event next year.”
