Clarke calls on the Catholic Church to honour agreement with Down Council on sale of land

Alliance Down Councillor Patrick Clarke has called on the Catholic Church to honour an agreement for the sale of land to build a new health and leisure centre in Newcastle. The Council had agreed a price for the sale of the old St Mary’s Primary School, but an estate agent has informed them that higher bids have now been lodged.

Cllr Patrick Clarke said: “Down Council and the Church had agreed a price for the sale of this land, so I will be disappointed at any attempt to renege on that agreement.

“I hope that they will honour the original agreement and not accept any other offer.

“If this deal falls through then it could set back plans for a new leisure centre in Newcastle by several years.”
