Campbell: Sinn Fein have questions to answer over Briege Meehan

Alliance Councillor Tom Campbell has said the conviction of former Newtownabbey Councillor Briege Meehan on child cruelty charges raises questions over how much Sinn Fein new about her behaviour.

Briege Meehan received a two-year suspended sentence for child cruelty and assault last week after admitting abusing her stepdaughter 34 years ago.

Councillor Campbell says questions must now be asked as to how much Sinn Fein knew about her past when she was selected to stand, and subsequently elected for, Newtownabbey Borough Council.

He said: “The evidence in this case of neglect and cruelty was shocking and my thoughts are with the victim as this process has finally come to an end.

“However, in the course of the case it became clear that concerns about the treatment of this child were well-known in the local community, including welfare and other organisations.

“Yet despite this, Sinn Fein saw fit to put Briege Meehan up for election again and again and that Party must know answer what they knew about her background during this time.

“As it stands I have seen no condemnation of the party of this disgraced and high profile former party official.”
