Cllr Tom Campbell, who is a former Chair of Newtownabbey District Policing Partnership, said: “It is shocking to think that someone could bring themselves to do something like this.
“I want to send my best wishes to the police officer injured in this incident and I hope she makes a speedy recovery.
“Police officers protect the community and they should be allowed to get on with their important job without facing despicable events of this nature. Attacks on police hurt the community because they divert police officers from their work to safeguard the public.
“Anyone who can assist police in their investigation into this incident should contact them immediately.”
