Minister Mark H Durkan announced DOE Planning approval for the 2,700 square metre storage and distribution facility after it was approved by Newtownabbey Council’s Planning Committee on Monday night.
The new unit will be constructed at Sandyknowes Business Park on the Antrim Road and include office space and car parking. Due to be completed by summer 2014, the construction phase will create 60-70 jobs, with 35-40 full time jobs secured when complete.
Councillor John Blair said: “This is fantastic news and a welcome boost for the greater Glengormley area.
“Thanks to the quick work of the Council’s development team, this proposal has quickly become a reality – creating a number of initial construction and longer term jobs.
“This investment is also a timely boost to local economic confidence, after recent concerns were raised about the future of jobs at the local M&S distribution centre.
“Newtownabbey has a lot to offer and this announcement is a reminder of the available skills and suitable roads infrastructure available in the area.”
