The incident, described by police as ‘brutal and horrific’, occurred in the Henry Place area in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Councillor John Blair said: “This was a chilling attack that has raised concern amongst the entire community.
“The thugs behind this have no place in our society and I would urge anyone with information to contact the police immediately so that those responsible can be brought to justice.
“Such barbaric attacks should never be allowed to become the norm in our society and there must be a commitment from all to root out paramilitarism and organised crime.”
