Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong has welcomed clarity from the Executive on the wearing of face coverings indoors.
Following today’s Executive meeting, it was announced face coverings should be worn in shops and other enclosed spaces from this Monday (August 10), with an information campaign to highlight it to the public over coming weeks.
“Despite the Executive previously agreeing to mandatory face coverings from earlier this month, that message appeared lost in translation, so this clarity is now welcome,” said Ms Armstrong.
“With the exception of those who are exempt, everyone should now be wearing masks in shops and other indoor spaces. The science is now showing face coverings are more likely to stop the spread of COVID-19, which is especially vital given shielding has now ended for those at heightened risk. Of course, regular hand-washing and social distancing should also still be practiced.
“There is no doubt this is a massive culture change for many people and we each have a role to play. Elected representatives in particular need to show leadership and help normalise this activity so we can protect as many people as possible. Wearing a mask in shops and other enclosed spaces is not really much to ask to help do that.”
