Armstrong welcomes cruise ship refitting at Harland and Wolff

Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong has welcomed news a major cruise ship is to be refitted at Harland and Wolff.

The multi-million-pound contract was won by the Newry-based MJM Group. It will see the company manage the docking, berthing and refit of the Azamara Pursuit in Belfast this April and the ship will make its maiden voyage in August.

“This is fantastic news for Northern Ireland, and Harland and Wolff in particular. I want to congratulate the MJM Group for winning this contract and wish them luck for carrying out the work.” said Ms Armstrong.

“I hope it sees jobs and financial investment brought into the local area, while attracting more businesses to use Northern Ireland as a base for future drydock work. This also follows on from the MJM Group securing their first drydock contract in Shenzhen, China, which commenced this week.

“Belfast has historically been seen a world leader in shipping. While the world’s economy has evolved, I hope this move will showcase the positives the city and wider Northern Ireland can still provide and become a world leader once again.”
